In this presentation, it will be argued that the Ilyenkov-Korovikov "Theses on Philosophy" that have been formulated in 1954 include the kernel of the main concepts and themes that Ilyenkov would develop in the next 25 years of his philosophical carrier and his conceptualization of philosophy as an independent, genuine science of theoretical thought and a materialist dialectical critique of epistemology. To this end, the theses will be contextualized within the framework of Ilyenkov's major writings.

In this paper, I revisit Adorno's account of Freud's social psychology as way of understanding the mechanisms of idealization of, and identification with, "great little men," by which "people become a mass." I conclude with some thoughts about how Adorno helps us to understand the appeal of authoritarian populists in our own age.

Contingency & Potential: Re-Considering Critical Theory after the Empirical Turn

kterou přednese

Dr. Darryl Cressman

(Maastricht University)

Over the past two decades, proponents of the empirical turn have constructed an intellectual history of the philosophy of technology in which the discipline can be neatly divided between classical and empirical approaches. The latter, influenced by work in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and phenomenology, takes as its starting point that humans and technical artifacts are intertwined and so the challenge for philosophers is conceptualizing the active engagements between humans and technologies without drawing a neat distinction between the two. In contrast, classical approaches, which are associated with philosophers like Martin Heidegger, Herbert Marcuse, and Jacques Ellul, have been deemed "classical" and reduced to essentialist holdovers from the past. In this presentation, I want to challenge this intellectual history by arguing that dialectical and critical philosophies of technology are neither essentialist nor do they rely upon simplistic dichotomies of liberation and domination. Rather, like work in STS and phenomenology, the critical, or dialectical, tradition is empirical and recognizes the inherent contingency of technical design and meaning. Where these approaches differ is that critical theories of technology are historically oriented towards the question of why we have the technologies we do, pointing to the distinctly sociotechnical contexts that precede and give meaning to our everyday experiences while opening up concrete potentials that can realize goals and ambitions that are different than those of the groups who design and administer technologies.

Understanding Sexual Violence

Abtract: Approaches to sexual assault have been dominated by a socio-pathology model, wherein those who assault are "pathological predators." This talk draws upon a large-scale team-based quantitative and qualitative study of sexual violence on at Columbia University and Barnard College, which takes a sociological approach, placing sexual violence in relation to "normal" sex, and looking at the individual, relational, institutional and cultural factors that lead to sexual violence. It argues that the vast majority of assaults are social, not pathological. And presenting a model of power and precarity, it begins a provisional outline of a model of the relationship between inequalities and assault, resting on the classic formulation of gender and power, but also integrating a range of other inequalities that generate precarities and thereby risks for assault. The implication is that reducing inequalities is essential to any strategy to address sexual violence.

Shamus R. Khan: New Directions in the Study of Elites

Abstract: In this lecture I outline some of the major challenges to research in this area and propose a series of theoretical and methodological pathways to address them. Theoretically I make four recommendations: (a) greater attentiveness to and specificity about the relationship between elites and power; (b) a clearer articulation of the relationships between elites and the varieties of capitalism; (c) far more attention to diversity within elites and the use of elites to understand forms of domination like white supremacy and masculine domination and (d) expanding beyond the orthodox form of Bourdieusian theoretical frameworks. Methodologically I outline how research using survey instruments, social network analysis (SNA) (and multiple correspondence analysis), interviews, ethnographic observation, experiments, archival research, administrative data and content analysis can each be deployed, built upon or redirected to help bring elites into greater focus.

Marxist Humanism

and the Rise of Ethnonationalism in Post-Stalinist Bulgaria

Zhivka Valiavicharska, Pratt Institute

Marxist humanism had a profound influence on the political, social, and cultural life of the socialist countries and on left movements throughout the globe during the 1960s and 1970s. This paper seeks to contribute to a critical and comparative reassessment of the Marxist-humanist turn in the socialist countries and their impact on intellectual and social life during the post-Stalinist period in Eastern Europe and beyond. While mapping the theoretical contributions of the humanist turn and its leading concepts—alienation, praxis, and the "holistically developed person," among others—the paper also examines the disturbing political directions that it took. It traces the peculiar convergence between Marxist humanism and ethnonationalism during the post-Stalinist period in socialist Bulgaria. Studying the formation of the ethnonationalist doctrine from the post-Stalinist period, the paper shows how the ethnic assimilation projects launched by the socialist government during the last three decades of socialism unfolded within a Marxist-humanist framework.

Oligarchy and the Politics of Wealth Power and Wealth Defense

Od 17.30 v budově AV ČR, Národní 3, Praha 1, sál 205.

Plakát

How can we theorize the politics of wealth across different societies and different eras of human history? Oligarchic theory allows us to view wealth as a power resource in a context of tremendous material inequality. The key questions to answer concern the changing nature of threats that oligarchs face (from whom and from where), and the changing political responses to those threats (who or what provides a reliable defense of great fortunes throughout history). This framework is important for understanding the changing role and locus of violence in maintaining unequal societies, as well as how democracy and oligarchy coexist in the modern era.
